Do you ever get caught up in ‘the pursuit of more’? Do you sometimes feel like once you have obtained X or you’ve arrived at Y, then you’ll be happy?

In today’s society, we’re encouraged to believe that we constantly need more in order to be happy, fulfilled, and reach our final destination.

But what if that’s all a lie? In today’s post, I’m here to share 7 reasons why I believe simple is best to live a happy life.

The meaning of simple is best

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not here to tell you that you shouldn’t be pursuing your dreams and goals and aspire to get to the next level. After all, I wrote a whole blog post about not settling for less.

What I want to share today, is that I believe we live a happier life when we live a simpler life.

What is the meaning of simple is best?

In my opinion, it means that we are content in every situation, with little or with much. It also means that we understand that material possessions, titles, and achievements, aren’t what give us happiness and joy.

To make it short, simple is best just means that a minimalist life, a life of simplicity, is what actually brings joy and peace in our life. It goes against the grain, seeing how society always wants to push us to buy more, spend more, and need more to be happy, but that is all a lie.

In the next section, I’m going to share seven specific reasons why I think simple is best.

7 reasons why simple is best for a happy life

  • Less stress

Who would intentionally pursue stress in their life? Not me! The beauty of living a simple life is that whilst we can’t control everything that’s going to happen, we can avoid getting stressed for unnecessary reasons.

Pursuing simplicity helps to remove any unimportant things from your life, and reduce the chances of getting stressed for many different reasons.

  • You focus on what matters

Another reason why I believe simple is best, is because it allows us to focus on what truly matters.

I don’t know if you noticed this, but more and more in our generation, I feel that people’s attention spans are extremely short, not to mention the fact that we give too much of our time and attention to things that don’t matter now or in the future.

Wouldn’t it be so much better to just focus on what does matter, and live a better life? I used to think that white space was an enemy and a sign that I was being lazy and not efficient with my time.

I would try to schedule meetings, listen to podcasts, and start new online courses, but I then realised that my attention span was decreasing more and more as time went by. Having a general declutter of your life will help you understand what truly matters, and what you need to stop doing.

  • You’re able to enjoy every moment

A simple life is the best life because it allows you to truly savour every moment, not rushing from one thing to the next, but being present in the here and now.

This continues to affirm my belief of ‘simple is best’, because there’s no better feeling than being present with your loved ones, building memories together that will last a lifetime. And even if you want to enjoy moments on your own, that is equally precious and worth pursuing.

  • Healthier life

This sort of links to the first reason I shared about a simple life being the best kind of life. Living in a constant rat race, under a lot of pressure and high levels of stress, isn’t good for our health.

When you choose simplicity over society’s current lifestyle, you realise that you feel healthier, in your body and your mind.

I’m not saying you should live on top of a mountain and never speak to another soul again, but what I am saying is that choosing where you invest your time and energy, will have a direct impact on your health.

  • Easier decision making

When there’s too much going on, even making simple decisions seems like a hard chore.

Choosing to adopt the ‘simple is best’ motto, will help you ease the decision-making process because you won’t be so overwhelmed by all the options you have.

  • More time to yourself

If you’ve been craving more time to yourself and hoping for a time when that will happen, let me tell you that there’s never going to be a time, unless you’re intentional with it.

The way to make it happen is by being more selective about how you spend your time, which is another way to say that you need to simplify your life.

Once you do that, you’ll realise that you’ll have more white space available that you can choose to dedicate to some self-care to recharge and rest.

  • Better balance

Finally, another reason why I believe simple is best, is because it allows you to have more balance in your life.

Because you’ll be more intentional about where you spend your time and energy, and you’ll be pursuing a simple lifestyle, it will be easier to live a balanced life without any regrets or feelings of overwhelm.
